The Phantom Menace

So our special correspondent, Nick Brown, was riding along on the safety boat today and put pen to paper to tell the story of the latest Twilight zone reports…

"The Phantom Menace and the Bumper Car Buoy".

It was a gloriously sunny evening at Shotwick, the kind that tricks you into thinking you're in the Mediterranean — until the breeze hits and you remember you're still in North Wales. A decent wind graced the lake, promising fantastic racing.

Nine boats took to the water as Jeremy leapt out to an early lead, no doubt trying to avoid any possible mid-fleet carnage. The rest of the fleet quickly bunched up, creating what can only be described as a nautical mosh pit. Shouts of Starboard! echoed across the water like an aggressive sea shanty, particularly towards Ian, who seemed more interested in bumper boats than sailboats.

Despite the melee, Conrad stayed calm, taking control at the line and proving that quiet determination (and maybe a slightly faster boat) can succeed.

The second lap saw the race descend into processional sailing — a sort of polite, wind-powered parade. But just as everyone began settling down, the Phantom appeared on the horizon like a vengeful sea ghost. It began hunting Conrad with silent menace, gaining ground with each gust. By the long run to mark X, the Phantom finally made its move — passing Conrad into clean air.

Still, Conrad refused to give in, staying close enough to remind the Phantom that he'd be back…

Another fantastic evening of sailing at Shotwick — sunshine, light rivalry, and just the right amount of carnage to keep it interesting.

The Phantom menace was Peter Jacobs, finishing 42 seconds ahead on elapsed time. However after the corrected times were calculated it was the stealthy Lightning dinghy, helmed by commodore Jeremy Cooper that sneaked into first place, followed by Conrad Brown (Laser) in second and Simon and Julie Dolman (Miracle) third.

Overall after five races its the same three boats, in the same order, that top the leader board!
