Strength in depth

While it is always fun to see who will top the podium during a series the real strength of Shotwick Lake Sailing is the breadth and depth of sailing experience throughout the fleet. Total beginners compete alongside the experts many racing for the first time and some with only limited sailing experience.
Dave Barker took up sailing in 2024, as a way of keeping active in retirement. With a barrel of enthusiasm and support from more experienced club members Dave took part in every weekend of the Brass Monkey Series. Dave learned to sail in a Topper dinghy and completed the RYA 1/2 course at the club last year. Having upgraded to a Laser he decided to give racing a go and despite admitting to multiple capsizes and fighting for places near the back of the fleet he has thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Dave commented: It has been a very steep and wet learning curve - I really appreciate the benefits of a dry suit! The highlight for me was the races where I didnt come last!!!
In fact Dave finished 18th out of 29 boats that completed during the series - well done Dave. So be like Dave, blow the dust off your boat, stop varnishing and polishing and get on the water next Sunday alongside Dave in the Spring Series.
