RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2)

What is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) Course?
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) course is the most popular entry-level powerboating qualification, designed for anyone aged 12 and over who wants to confidently and safely operate small powerboats such as RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) and open motorboats. It's a practical, hands-on course that introduces the core skills needed to drive and handle a powerboat effectively.
Over two days, participants learn how to launch and recover a boat from a trailer, perform basic maneuvers such as turning, stopping, and man-overboard recovery, and practice handling at both low and high speeds. The course also includes essential theory such as understanding tides, navigation basics, safety equipment, and rules of the road at sea (known as the Collision Regulations).
By the end of the course, students will feel confident in their ability to drive a powerboat responsibly in familiar waters during daylight hours. For those over 16, successful completion also qualifies you for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) an important credential if you plan to hire or skipper a powerboat abroad.
The PB2 course is ideal for beginners, but also hugely valuable for those who've had informal experience and want to formalise their skills. It's widely recognised by clubs, employers, and boat hire centres, making it a great step into the world of boating.

The course includes pre-start checks, launching and recovery, close

Additional training is also provided at the club including the recovery of dinghies, the racing traffic light system, and action to be taken following typical scanarios during dinghy racing. In order to provide safety cover at dinghy racing power, boat helms are required to attend a three hour refresher every two years.
