Junior Session » All juniors to be accompanied by an adult

11th July, 14:00 - 16:00

One of the top priorities for the club in 2026 is to help our younger members and families to get on to the lake in a safe and fun environment with safety boat cover available.

Junior sailing sessions will be held throughout the warmer months on a series of Saturday afternoon dates. The dates are listed below, with the first being Saturday 18th April. They will be added to the club event calendar on the website. Open to dinghies, kayaks, paddle boards and windsurfers, to total beginners and our more experienced juniors.

During each session accompanied juniors will be able to get onto the water with their responsible adult, as well as participate in a range of activities and in the better weather hopefully end the afternoon with a family-style BBQ. It is also a great opportunity for them to get to know each other and of course have fun!

A safety boat will be on the lake during each session and the participating juniors will be tagged on and off the water. So there is no need to worry about making mistakes or not being confident as expert support will be nearby.

We recognise that often the adults also lack confidence and may be nervous about being out in their boat for the first time with youngsters so would encourage the adults to ask lots of questions and learn too!

Note these are not drop-and-leave sessions, but require a named responsible adult to directly supervisor their juniors. They are designed to get adult/juniors water confident and able to get onto the water safely, whatever type of craft they are using, and for those more experienced to get out on the water in good company and have fun - as well as acting as great role-models of course!

A shore-based coordinator will be present to provide admin support. More experienced members may also be present and, as always, will be happy to share their experience, although these are not formal RYA training sessions.

It is hoped that as junior members (and their adults!) become more confident they will be able to also take advantage of the in-house RYA training courses that the club runs, leading to formal sailing qualifications. As experience grows then they can also join the racers, especially in the beginner-friendly pursuit races as well as taking part in the regular Friday evening social sailing evenings.
