ASDA Athletes
Sailing is the most successful Olympic sport in this country and Great Britain is the world's top Olympic sailing nation. The Laser 4.7 Class and Laser Radial Class are a key part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Junior & Youth Programmes, which feeds the Olympic sailing programme. Tom Williams (4.7) and Tom Piggott (Radial) from Shotwick Lake Sailing Club have been nominated by their Sports National Governing Body to SportsAid.

Both sailors have shown commitment to their sports and have represented both Wales and Team GBR on a National, European and World level. Their nominations are due to their sailing achievements and potential abilities shown. Both sailors will be participating in a programme of National and International competitions, as well as domestic training over this year. SportsAId work alongside the National Governing Bodies of Sport, allowing them to recognise and support talented athletes. SportsAid work with a range of commercial partners to secure funding for talented sports people. Asda have worked closely with SportsAid for several years. Tom Williams had been partnered with Asda, Wrexham and Tom Piggott has been partnered with Asda, Kimnel Bay, Rhyl.

To kick start their time as Asda Athletes they were invited to attend Wembley Stadium. They took part in a range of activities and workshops from Asda. The swimmer Mark Foster came along to chat to the athletes about managing their training versus their school work and how to manage the highs and lows of their sporting achievements. Mark shared his experiences as a SportsAid backed athlete. Whilst at Wembley they collected their sponsorships, this funding which is provided by Asda to support costs incurred in pursing their sport, and to be used at the athletes own discretion. The Asda Athletes Programme is now in its fourth year of providing talented young British sportsmen and women with a sporting chance. Asda support athletes through their partnership with Sports Aid. They select one athlete, from across all sporting disciplines, per store they have 375 nominated stores in total. This is a fantastic achievement for both Tom's who have been selected due to their sporting potential and promise.
