Frostbite Open Series Sundays from 28th October

Frostbite Open Series
This years Frostbite open series commences on Sunday 28th October.
Keep sailing until the end of the season.
Start time 11:00

Road Closed 27th - 28th Sept

"The access road to Shotwick Lake will be closed to traffic next Thursday and Friday (27th & 28th September) until late afternoon Friday whilst National Grid dig an exploratory ditch in the vicinity of the railway bridge. This is part of their survey work ahead of the installation of the Western Link High Voltage DC cable. We apologise for any inconvenience to members caused by this unavoidable work. The directors of Shotwick Lake are in liason with National Grid and both parties will endeavour to minimise any future disruption. We thank you for your patience".

Work Party
15th Sept

IMPORTANT NOTICE – Attention all members
Work party 15th September 2012
Many thanks to the 20 or so members that were able to help at the last work party two weeks ago. We achieved a great deal but as always, there is still much to do. Hence there is another work party at the lake this Saturday.
I anticipate that we will need support for the whole morning and perhaps, throughout the day but if you are short of time (or energy) there is no need to commit to the whole day. Any help that you can offer will be gratefully received and rewarded by free cups of tea/coffee (and hopefully if I can persuade Mrs Hopson once again, homemade cakes). Of course the main reward is improvements at your club.
The main task is to temporarily move all boats that are stored in bays L1 to L65 from along the western boundary fence to the lake side, in order to facilitate a trench to be dug in preparation for the installation of tie down hoops, which are to be set in concrete. Once the tie down points are in place (and the concrete set) we will need another work party to move the boats back. Any boats that appear to have been abandoned and not displaying a current membership sticker will be permanently relocated to another area of the lake.
As some of the bays are severely overgrown, you are advised to bring protective gloves and boots. It may also be helpful if you are able to bring tools suitable for removing undergrowth, brambles and brush. If anyone can bring a camping trailer, that would also be helpful for removing and relocating waste.
I look forward to seeing you; any questions, give me a call

Open Day 23rd June

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU

On Saturday 23rd June the club will be holding the annual Open Day. This is a great opportunity to publicise the club and a fun event. We need help with various tasks on the day ranging from putting up bunting, flags and posters to directing visitors to the various activities, helping with the galley, helping visitors with buoyancy aids and boarding dinghies. More experienced sailors, particularly the training volunteers, will be needed to take visitors sailing and to help with the windsurfing tasters, both on the simulator and on the water. We will require safety boat crews (helms with minimum of Powerboat Level 2). We also need as many members as possible out dinghy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing or just being present to help with the atmosphere of the day. If you can help in any of these ways please email: training@shotwicksailing.org
Remember that this is your club and your help will make all the difference.

RYA Recognition 12th May

Club Retains RYA Recognition

CLUB RETAINS RYA RECOGNITION Commodore & RYA Training Principal, Tony Forster is pleased to announce that, following a thorough inspection of Shotwick Lake Sailing's training facilities, equipment & staff by Nic Wymer of the RYA, we have retained our recognition to operate RYA Dinghy & Windsurf courses for adults and youths and RYA Powerboat courses for adults. This annual inspection took place on 12th May whilst a Dinghy Level 1&2 course was running and Nic was quite impressed by our operating procedures/safety policy, the instructional staff, the dinghies, windsurf boards and powerboats together with the onshore training and amenity facilities. Two minor observations have been actioned. Having RYA recognition for training is a vital part of promoting the club and for encouraging new members. The club is very grateful to those willing volunteers who work so hard to achieve this recognition and help to train others to allow them to take up our wonderful sport.

Handicap Open 22nd April

Work Party
4th March

Work party 4th March

Many thanks to all of those members (more than 10% of the membership) that attended the work party on Sunday 4th March (and also to those that mistakenly attended on Saturday 3rd March but who nonetheless carried out a number of maintenance tasks). Your help was very much appreciated.

The event proved very successful and was also quite a social occasion with both long term members and new members working as a team to complete the long list of tasks. General maintenance activity and repairs were combined with clearance of old rafts, pontoons, rubbish and undergrowth in preparation for the start of the sailing season. The work was compensated by free tea, coffee and freshly baked plum cake along with the personal satisfaction of contributing to the economic running of the club.

The date for the next working party has not yet been set but details will be posted on the web site. If in the meantime, you should notice anything that needs attention or improvement, please contact Steve Hopson 01244 571386 to make sure that it is added to the list of tasks for the next work party.

Club Race Officer Duty Rota 2012

Jack Frodsham
Tue 6th Dec

On Wednesday 7th December we had the very sad news of a long serving member's passing. Jack came out of hospital on the previous Friday feeling better and looking forward to a long awaited recovery. After enjoying an extended weekend he went to sleep on Tuesday night but failed to wake Wednesday morning.

The funeral will be held at Blacon crematorium at 11:30 on Tuesday 20th December. Everyone is invited afterwards to the Whitby Sports and Social Club (formerly the Shell Club). Jack's family have requested that there are no flowers. Donations in lieu of flowers will be passed to the RNLI and The British Heart Foundation.

Windsurfing

Shotwick Lake Sailing is pleased to announce that it has obtained recognition from the Royal and Welsh Yachting Associations to teach Windsurfing.

The Club has always had a core of windsurfing members, but with the arrival at the Club of Windsurfing Senior Instructor Michael Plane has been able to satisfy the requirements for registration for instruction.

New equipment has now been purchased and the club's first RYA and WYA recognised Start Windsurfing course, for adults, is running over the two Saturdays 1st and 8th October.

Places are limited, and good value at £65 including logbooks and certification.  If you are interested in a place on the course then please call Michael in 07719 923193 or e-mail windsurfing@shotwicksailing.org.

Another exciting development is the Club's registration for the T15 Windsurfing initiative.  This provides regular coaching for young people, aged between 8 and 15, the opportunity to sail with others of the same age group, and the option to take part in regional competitions with other local clubs.  The Club is commencing T15 activities around Easter 2012, but please contact us now to register your interest, as, again, numbers will be limited.

ASDA Athletes

Tom Williams (Laser 4.7) and Tom Piggott (Laser Radial) from Shotwick Sailing Club have been sponsored by Asda this year and went to Wembley Stadium to collect their sponsorships.

Tom Williams is in the GB 4.7 Laser squad and the Welsh National Laser Squad and Tom Piggot is in Welsh National Laser  squad.  The funding is to assist with the costs involved in traveling to the events.

Whilst at Wembley they took part in a range of activities and workshops from Asda and also the swimmer Mark Foster came along to chat to the athletes about managing their training versus their school work and how to manage the highs and lows of their sporting achievements.

The Asda Athletes Programme is now in its fourth year of providing talented young British sportsmen/women with a sporting chance. Asda support athletes through their partnership with Sports Aid and they select one athlete, from across all sporting disciplines, per store (375 stores in total) so this is a fantastic achievement for both Tom's.
