Guidance for Race Officers

The following steps are simplified guidance only. Anyone wishing to improve their Race Officer and Race Management skills should consider a Race Officer Management Courses.

  1. Please turn up in plenty of time to judge the sailing conditions.

  2. Ask the rescue coxswain to tell you the predominant wind direction in the centre of the lake.

  3. Selecting a course:

  • Select an appropriate course from the approved course folder.

  • Draw the course on the blackboard 20 minutes in advance of the start of the race.

  • Any race held after the first race of the day should be planned with

    experience of the previous race.

  • Set the number of laps to take fastest boats at least one hour.

  1. Start line:

  • Set the start line with a suitable length for the number of boats racing.

  • Set approximately 0 to 5 degrees port bias.

  • Locate the start line as far down wind as appropriate so the fleet spread out before reaching the windward mark.

  1. Start sequence:

  • Follow the instructions on the flag trolley to activate the pre-programmed 5-4-1-0 start sequence.

  • For the Spring racing series we will be trialling separate slow and fast handicap race starts.
The start sequence for the fast handicap fleet will continue to be 5-4-1-0. After a one minute interval the 5-4-1-0 sequence will be repeated for the slow handicap fleet.
There will be a debate to review this at the end of the Spring series. Your opinions after this trial will be valued.

  1. Finishing:

  • Intend to finish the race after approximately one hour.

  • Give consideration of lap times of the fastest and slowest boats.

  • Accurately record lap numbers (especially lapped boats).

  • Shortening course; sound two blasts and raise the indicated flag as the first place boat passes the penultimate buoy.

  • Sound one blast and record the time as the bow of each boat crosses the finish line.

  1. In summary, you should do all in your power to ensure that all competitors and volunteers enjoy the event.
  2. If in doubt, Ask! There will be plenty of people about who will be glad to help.
