New Safety Boat |
Our brand new
safety boat has arrived!
Safety boat
coxswains are requested to ask a
committee member to explain the new procedures for using this boat.
The new boat has a
more powerful 30HP Honda four stroke engine (so no more mixing oil &
fuel!). The engine is fitted with electric tilt and electric start
and there is a padded seat for the driver, so we predict a long
queue for volunteer rescue boat duties!

Open Day |
Our Open Day held
on Saturday 16th June, despite a depressing weather forecast, was an
overwhelming success. Many members and an unprecedented number
of visitors were rewarded with sunshine and a steady breeze for the
whole of the afternoon. The clubs newly purchased Wanderer dinghies
didn't stop for a minute taking potential new members out for a
"taster". Likewise, our new Windsurfing Secretary, Peter Siderfin
was kept busy with "wannabe surfers" on the club simulator and on
the water.

Scorpion Training and Open |
7 Scorpions turned
up for the race training on Saturday 5th May. Jerry Hannabus once
again delivered an excellent day of top tips on boat speed upwind
and downwind. Everyone gathered at a local pub on the Saturday
evening for a meal and an evening of socialising. The best part of
the Scorpion scene!
|
|
|
The wind had
stepped up a notch on the Sunday to an ideal force 4 from the West.
9 Scorpions made it to the start line and Terry Flannagan, pictured
right, in Scorpion 1934 was clear ahead in all three races. Carl and
Shellie Jones in Scorpion 1974 managed a 2nd place in the first
race, 3rd in race 2 and 2nd again in the final race to take 2nd
place overall. Pete Crowther and Dave Thompson in Scorpion
1865 had some boat problems in race 1 and had to retire, came 2nd in
race 2 and 3rd in race 3 to give them the third spot overall.

WYA |
During the winter
Shotwick Lake has been hosting development squad training for ten
young seven to eight year olds in Optimist dinghies. The training
has been beneficial in developing their confidence, boat handling
skills and general sailing knowledge.
Shotwick Lake was
selected as an ideal venue because of the sheltered inland water,
on-shore facilities and the positive links maintained by the club
with the Welsh Yachting Association. |
 |

|
|
The training took place over ten Saturdays from
November to April and at the end of the sessions they enjoyed a
weekend at Pwllheli. Sailors have attended from all over North Wales
including, Caernarfon, Pwllheli and Conwy.
If you are interested in assisting in coaching,
or would like more details of the Welsh Yachting Association
Squad training, please contact the WYA Regional
Development Officer for North Wales:

Rule Dispute Training |
'Shotwick Lake sailing', like
many other sailing clubs, have seen a dramatic reduction in the
number of protests taken to committee.
The RYA "understands a reluctance to take matters to
protest hearings, but no one in the sport should condone disregard
of the rules".
To address this issue, we are looking for interested dinghy racers
to train as advisors to run advisory hearings, in the new and
simplified RYA Best Practice Rules Disputes.
The course will be run at the club on a Saturday in late February or
early March.
