End of Season Pursuit Race 17th Dec
2006 |
The last race of the season proved to
be a resounding success for the twenty four boats who competed. The
pursuit race gave the slower boats a chance to get ahead, although
the first boats over the start line drifted along in light airs
before the faster boats joined them in a welcome breeze. First place
went to Solo sailor Geoff Siddel while the overall winner of the
Frostbite Series, Dave Turtle and Huw Jones struggled against their
personal handicap set according to their sterling performance
throughout the Frostbite Series.

From Left: Bob Lowe, chairman Welsh Yachting Association, Carl
Sergeant AM, Mark Tami MP, Cllr Ron Davies, chairman AD Waste, Tony
Forster, Shotwick Lake Sailing, Alan
Morris, manufacturing director Corus Shotton, Mark Isherwood AM,
John Grey, Flintshire Local Voluntary Council.
Following two hard
years of fund raising by the former Corus Sailing Club to purchase
the lake from the Welsh Assembly, Commodore Tony Forster welcomed
members and visitors to the grand opening of Shotwick
Lake.
Tony Forster
received the key to Shotwick
Lake from the Welsh Assembly and Corus. A commemorative
plaque was unveiled by Flintshire Local Voluntary Council.
Thanks were made to
all those who have helped the success of the purchase, in
particular, Sportlot via the Sports Council for Wales, AD Waste via
Flintshire Community Trust, Flintshire Local Voluntary trust, and to
the members of Corus Sailing Club for their generous donations.
Carl Sergeant,
representing the Welsh Assembly Government said: ‘I am delighted
that Shotwick Lake Sailing has been able to purchase the lake. With
its fully open membership, Shotwick Lake Sailing is a wonderful
community resource; indeed, it is the only facility of its kind in
Flintshire’. He went on to say: ‘Earlier this year I was delighted
to announce that Shotwick Lake Sailing had been selected to receive
a Welsh Assembly Community Facilities and Activities Programme grant
to the sum of £18,000.’
The rest of the day
saw much activity on the lake with sailing, windsurfing and canoe
polo alike. The events were helped along with a buffet and barbeque
to which all were welcome.
